How to: Prepare Your Closet for a Seasonal Swap

Whether it’s a summer-to-fall transition or preparing for warmer months, a closet seasonal swap allows you to keep your wardrobe in top shape, and look and feel your best year-round. It's an essential ritual that ensures your wardrobe remains functional, organized, and aligned with the current weather. Here's how SBP recommends you get it done!

The first step in this process is to assess and declutter your existing wardrobe. Conduct your own little closet edit, take time to carefully evaluate each item of clothing, asking yourself whether it has been worn recently, does it still fit, and is in good condition. Donate or sell your clothes that no longer serve a purpose. This will help you create some space for the new season’s clothes and also give your a refresher of what you might need to replace.

Next, categorize the clothing that will be put away for the season. For example, during a summer-to-fall transition, your summer whites, lightweight dresses, and bright patterned items should be stored away. The goal is to simplify your closet so that there is plenty of space for heavier layers like sweaters, jackets, and pants. We recommend using a clothing rack to help you sort and keep things hanging so you can see them. It’s best to properly clean and prepare these off-season items before storing them. Do the overdo dry cleaning haul and check those alterations off your list. Your future self will thank you and stains and odors can become more difficult to remove with time. We recommend using using garment bags, vacuum-sealed bags, or storage bins to protect your clothing from dust, moisture, and pests.

Once you’ve cleared out the off-season items, focus on refreshing and organizing the clothes you’ll be wearing in the upcoming season. This is an excellent time to inspect your fall or winter wardrobe for any necessary repairs- fixing loose buttons, mending hems, or replacing worn-out shoes. Take inventory of your essential items—like coats, scarves, boots, and layering pieces—to ensure you have everything you need for the season ahead. If there are gaps in your wardrobe, make a list. There are fabulous sales around Thanksgiving, so we recommend keeping an eye out around then.

Next it's time to actually organize your closet, prioritize visibility and accessibility. Arrange your clothing in a way that makes it easy to see and reach items that you’ll be using frequently. Place heavier coats and jackets at the front of your closet, as these will likely be your go-to pieces during the colder months. Consider organizing by category (e.g., tops, bottoms, outerwear) or by color to streamline your daily routine and make it easier to put together outfits. Utilize shelves, hanging organizers, and storage bins to maximize space and keep your closet tidy.

A well-organized closet is not just about functionality—but also preserving your clothes. Take the time to invest in nice hangers, boot stuffers, and a clothing rack. When you treat your items with care they last longer and serve you better. We well organized closet can really make the experience of getting dressed each day more easy and enjoyable.

Lastly, don’t forget to adapt your accessories and footwear to the new season. Swap out summer sandals and lightweight scarves for boots, gloves, and chunky knits. Organize these items in a way that allows for easy access, such as placing boots on a dedicated shoe rack or hanging scarves on hooks. Additionally, consider storing any off-season accessories, like beach hats or swimwear, in labeled bins or drawers, so they’re easy to find when the season rolls around again.

Preparing and executing your closet swap is a a good way to protect your clothes and asses your wardrobe needs. By taking the time to invest in your closet you're also investing in your daily quality of life.
